Timing is key when it comes to making changes

Today marks the end of my fifth month with LR Digital. It’s been five months of highs and lows but I am finally starting to feel settled in myself. It’s taken some time to adapt to a new way of working and recently I found that that I was asking myself “why didn’t I do this sooner?”

For me the answer is simple, the time wasn’t right.

Why timing is key to change:

Timing has everything to do with our success in life, whether it’s on a personal or professional basis. Over the last 8 years I’ve been working in digital marketing and have been fortunate to gain so much experience within this short window. From working with small family run businesses, getting hands-on experience with all aspects of marketing from website design & development, social media management, brochure design, tradeshow events, the list goes on. Then, all the other stuff that gets assigned to marketing, ‘because that’s what you do, isn’t it?’ (if you are a marketeer, you know what I am talking about!).

Although I was working full-time, I had some small side projects on a freelance basis. I worked with small businesses locally to help them get up and running from a marketing perspective. The satisfaction I gained from these projects knowing that I have contributed to the digital success of the business is a wonderful feeling. Now I am working with 11 businesses throughout Ulster & Leinster, from an all-round strategic marketing perspective to help them develop their brand, which is very exciting. I’ve always wanted to take the leap and have my own business one day, I wasn’t sure when, but it would happen one day.

Feeling unfulfilled

In my career, I was feeling unfulfilled. I spent time working on projects for 6 or 12+ months where I had little or no control on the outcome. Deadlines were missed, relationships were fading and for me, enjoying what I do is worth more than anything. I came across an opportunity at the college I studied at and applied for the role. I have a passion for learning, helping others, and sharing knowledge. I get satisfaction from helping others develop their skills and passion in digital marketing.

Before applying for this role, I asked myself:

  • Was it out of my depth? Yes.

  • Was I willing to put in the effort to ensure that I do an amazing job? Absolutely!

  • Was I going to lose anything if I didn’t get the job? No, but I would gain the experience.

Make a promise to yourself and follow through

When I was called for the interview, I made a promise to myself that if I secured this role, I would leave my full-time role and build my own brand LR Digital. And here I am.

Now, it wasn’t as easy as I have made out, but I won’t bore you with the details. As the saying goes, “nothing worth having is easy."

Takeaway for readers:

I am a firm believer of what’s for you won’t pass you, even at the time you might not think so, but you will find that this will be the case in time.
